Originating from Gisborne in New Zealand, soprano Claire Egan has been praised for exhibiting “a richness of voice with a glistening, shimmering quality that reveals great nuance in sound”.  Renowned for her portrayal of Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata, Claire has had the privilege of performing the role on stages including the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Vienna Festwochen, Theatre an der Wien and Longborough Festival Opera in the U.K.

Performing with companies including the English National Opera, Hungarian State Opera, Salzburg Festival, Opera North and Wexford Opera Festival, recent role highlights include Donna Elvira, Don Giovanni; Cordelia, Lear; Mrs. Fiorentino, Street Scene; Woglinde, Das Rheingold; Waldvogel, Siegfried; Konstanze, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Gilda, Rigoletto and The Babysitter, Between Worlds.

Passionate about art song, recent projects include a film recording project of Schoenberg's 'Das Buch der hängenden Gärten' for Fondazione Haydn Stiftnung, a recording of Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen as part of the Positive Notes Autumn Recital Series, Whānau Voices live from the Royal Albert Hall and 'Live at Lunch' at the Royal Opera House. During 2023 Claire looks forward to performing at the Oriental Club in London, and as a guest artist with Mel Mercier and the Irish Gamelan Orchestra in Cork. On the concert platform performance highlights include Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Handel’s Messiah.

Claire was a Solti-Te Kanawa scholar; a Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation grant recipient; winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland Encouragement Award, winner of the Piero Boni competition in Italy, and a McDonalds Aria and Herald Sun aria competition finalist. She has coached with artists including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Mirella Freni, Mariella Devia, Ileana Cotrubus and Sir Richard Bonynge. Claire trained at The Cardiff International Academy of Voice under Dennis O’Neill, and as an English National Opera, Opera Works Artist. Prior to this she completed a bachelor of performance voice at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia.

Claire began training as a classical singer in her mid-twenties after being discovered on the ABC television show 'Operatunity Oz' - before this she worked as a guitar maker and professional photographer.

Reviews

Classical Source:

"Leading the strong cast is the exceptional talent of Claire Egan who pours her heart into Violetta, singing with complete assurance, dispatching coloratura as if born to it and producing a fine legato too. What’s more, she can act and is fully able to express feelings; Violetta’s passionate plea to Alfredo to love her (Act Two) is dazzling and the orchestral support here is tremendous. Later, as Violetta wrestles with her mental decline Egan gives a wonderfully moving vision of a cosy future huddled and delusional in the arms of Alfredo sung by Peter Gijsbertsen.”( Full Review:

The Arts Desk:

"Claire Egan, a young New Zealand soprano out of the Cardiff Academy of Voice, is a talented singer we’ll be hearing a good deal more of... Egan has vocal brilliance and a strong stage presence and knows how to move. Not only was her first act aria done with real style and mature control... but she held the empty stage alone in a beautiful account of “Addio del passato” at the start of Act 3.” (Full Review: https://theartsdesk.com/opera/la-traviata-longborough-festival-review-muddled-director-vocal-mixed-bag )

Music OMH:

"Claire Egan is outstanding. Her voice combines a degree of richness with a glistening, shimmering quality that reveals great nuance in sound, excellent phrasing and some wonderful pianissimos towards the top of her register. Her achievement is made all the greater by the fact that the direction is physically demanding as, for example, she sings part of ‘Sempre libera’ embracing Alfredo as they both lie horizontally on a table". BachTrack: "Claire Egan’s Elvira was every inch the wronged woman, still vulnerable enough nearly to make the same mistake twice, and since the opera is given in its Vienna version, she could show her considerable skills in “Mi tradi”. Seen & Heard International: "There is no doubting the commitment of Claire Egan (Donna Elvira)... Hers is a rich and expressive voice and nowhere more so than in Act 2." https://seenandheard-international.com/2019/07/longboroughs-female-centric-don-giovanni/

Classical Source: "Claire Egan makes a sympathetic Donna Elvira, fully encompassing the role’s wider emotional range." http://www.classicalsource.com/db_control/db_concert_review.php?id=16617
